Food Aid

Members of the Greek Shipowners’ community have been exclusively funding the social welfare and solidarity programme since 2012. Our commitment was implemented with a view to becoming an essential component in preserving social cohesion while providing an effective platform of support for thousands of fellow citizens in need and many important organizations across the country.

  • Monthly support was provided to
    40,000 beneficiaries
    including 22,500 children
    in need.
  • Provisions of
    8,500 tons of food
and personal hygiene items were offered in
    240,000 support packages.

55% OF THE SUPPORT PACKAGES WERE DISTRIBUTED TO FAMILIES IN ATTICA AND MACEDONIA, 30 % WERE DISTRIBUTED AMONGST FAMILIES IN THE PELOPONNESE, THESSALY AND THE AEGEAN ISLANDS AND 15% TO FAMILIES IN CENTRAL GREECE, THRACE, EPIRUS, CRETE AND THE IONIAN ISLANDS.

The food programme targeted disadvantaged families with underage or disabled children based on pre-determined social and income criteria. SYN-ENOSIS provided monthly support packages with 35 kg of basic standardized food and personal hygiene items.

Initially implemented in Attica, the food programme has gradually significantly expanded to include various other regions across the country. In December 2012, 2,480 families were assisted and in December 2013 the number of recipient families rose to 9,732 and then again to 11,170 in December 2014, when 12,350 support packages were distributed to meet their nutritional needs (families with 4 or more underage children received two packages). This action was carried out in 119 areas on both the islands and the mainland in cooperation with 42 Bishoprics, 16 local churches, 28 municipalities and 33 social welfare bodies engaged in supporting vulnerable population groups, holding regular social registries and providing social services.

Additionally, a seasonal support package was distributed to 5,000 distressed families in the municipalities of Attica during Christmas 2014.

The social support work that the Greek shipping community has traditionally performed on a collective basis was reallocated from the Union of Greek Shipowners to the Greek Shipowners’ Social Welfare Company SYN-ENOSIS.

SYN-ENOSIS realizes a food aid programme addressed to disadvantaged families based on pre-determined social and income criteria. The programme provides monthly support packages with basic standardized food and personal hygiene items.
